This is my first story and I want to share some of my first attempts at painting birds in watercolours.
It was in 2021 and I had been hooked on bird photography for just over 12 months. By this time I had a half decent camera and lens and my wife Kate and I organised a road trip to Tasmania.
I was excited about photographing some new birds. At the last minute I took along a small cheap watercolour travel set and sketchbook.
It was fun to capture some different birds and I loved that I managed to find some Scarlett Robins - a first for me.
My first attempts at watercolours were pretty bad but I learnt a lot and enjoyed having a go with this new challenging medium.
The experience in Tassie gave me the bug to learn and practice more. I realised straight away I needed better paints, better brushes and most importantly much better paper to paint on.
I also began searching YouTube looking for tutorials on watercolour painting to learn and practice the basics.
So here is a little video of some examples of my first attempts at watercolour birds using my own reference photos.
