Jasmin is the owner operator and amazing cook at one of our very successful local small businesses Greentrees Gourmet Preserves, located at Molong NSW. I first met Jasmin when she was just getting into her car at Hillside Harvest Farm Store where she had purchased two of my watercolour bird paintings at their Community Art Exhibition and Fire Festival event. Hillside Harvest is another wonderful local successful small business situated on the outskirts of Orange at Borenore.
Jasmin had bought one of my shadowbox paintings of an Eastern Yellow Robin as well as one of my Wrensday series, a lovely jenny wren. She was very happy with her purchases and particularly loved my painting of a plump female superb fairywren. Jasmin asked me if I could paint her a male superb fairywren posed in similar fashion and facing the female so she could hang them as a pair.
Undertaking this commission I set out preparing by looking through all my wren photographs and collected the best of my shots of male superb wrens in the one album. I then picked out four options for Jasmin to consider where the male was perched on a branch and looking towards the left.
Using a bit of digital magic and adjustment in photoshop I mocked up these four options and sent them to Jasmin to consider. Jasmin had a very clear image of what she wanted the painting to be and her choice of Option D was guided by her imagination of these two wrens being hung together and looking towards each other.
As she explained it :
“I know it sounds silly but the little hen is looking up quizzically at the little male.
I think he needs to be actually eyeing her off – after all she is exquisite - and I think he is a bit taken with her.”
"Dear John, thank you for completing my painting of the Male Blue Wren.
He has such a speculative look in his eye as he sees that beautiful little female.
She is just gorgeous – and she knows it – and knows she has attracted his attention.
They will have many happy years gazing at each other in my home."
